Today’s WorthWorkn4Wednesday blog is about the importance of making one’s bed in the morning and how it impacts our productivity in unrealized ways.

One of the habits that I have started to practice in this year, 2024Ward is to start making my bed every morning.  Many of us don’t give much importance to our beds besides seeing it as a place of rest and sleep. Your bed is the last thing you see at night and the first place from where you start your day. So, how we choose to start our day matters.
But we are often enough in a hurry in the morning to make our beds, thinking we would do it a bit later in day. Many a times, we don’t get the time to get back to this task. Some of us don’t give much importance to these mundane tasks. However, making the bed can symbolize the transition from the restful state of sleep to the wakeful state of being ready for the day and the challenges, as well as challenges, it is to bring.

The thing is that although no one else might be seeing our beds, an unmade bed does impact our personal energy and that surrounding us, as well as our mindset and productivity.

The simple habit of making your bed in the morning can indeed improve our productivity.

Creating Order and Organization

An unmade bed looks messy and chaotic. On the other hand, a neatly made bed promotes a sense of control and reduces feelings of chaos. Moreover, a neatly made bed creates a more organized and visually appealing environment, which is important if you work from home.

Furthermore, a neatly made bed is a welcoming sight for anyone entering home after a long and hard day at work.

Not only this but this small attempt to keep stuff organized can positively impact other areas of your life. For instance, if you are a person who needs the motivation to ‘get going’ then managing to complete a small task like making your bed can give you a sense of accomplishment early in the day. Consequently, this positive start can set the tone for the rest of your day.

Cultivate Discipline

Every positive habit is situated in a routine that is easy enough to follow yet powerful enough to impact your work and life. If you are attempting to create a positive mindset, then a small habit like making your bed would help you bring more purposefulness and discipline in your life.
Furthermore, I believe that this is a life skill that should absolutely teach your children to instill in them the values of routine, responsibility and discipline. Moreover, through positive and personal example and encouragement, you can transform a simple chore into a positive experience for yourself and your child.

Start Your Day with Calm (Instead of Chaos)

Mornings can be rough and a bit of a kick start, if your familial responsibilities are multiple or your job is demanding. Also, if you suffer from mental conditions like anxiety or depression, it becomes harder to climb out of bed in the morning. So, this small act of tidying up your bed can have a calming effect on your frenzied mind.

Moreover, reducing clutter and putting your pillows and covers in order promote a sense of order and peace. Having a structured start to the day helps you cultivate a certain degree of control on your life, add elements of predictability and reduce stress and anxiety.

Making Your Bed is Joy

In a world mired with wars, economic downfalls, and uncertainty, waking up in the comfort of your home, room and bed is an absolute privilege. Not everyone is lucky enough to have the means, health and wealth to enjoy it. It’s a sign that your basic and essential needs are being met. It’s also a gift that everyone doesn’t have or get to enjoy. So my bed is my comfort and joy.

But to a mind stuck on the negative, it maybe something small or trivial in the bigger scheme of things, but to someone who is positive, mindful and grateful, a comfy and organized seems nothing short of a blessing after a hard day of work. So stop seeing as your life and privileges as insignificant or ‘not enough’. It is because a ‘scarcity mindset’ means a ‘limited mindset’ and constricted view of life.  Thus, once we awaken ourselves to the realization to all the small things we have, we become aware of the integral privileges and blessings we have. It is then that we start making the efforts, adding small habits that improve our productivity and peace in life.   

To Sum Up

Our productivity is vested in conscious choices, small meaningful actions and mindful habits that we choose to cultivate in life. Establishing the habit of making your bed daily can contribute to building other positive habits. It creates a chain reaction of small, positive behaviors that can lead to greater overall productivity. While making your bed alone won’t magically solve all productivity challenges, it can be a simple and effective way to start your day on a positive note. It sets a tone of orderliness and accomplishment that can influence your mindset and behavior throughout the day.
