goal setting

This year is near about over. It is the time usually for introspection. Most of us tend to wonder about all the goals we had set for ourselves our success or failure in terms of goal achievement.

This WorthWorkin4Wednesday tip is all about the balance between attachment and detachment for successful goal achievement:

A lot of us are unable to achieve our goals and often wonder what’s the point of setting goals in the first place. The reason behind this failure can be multiple: Maybe you are setting unrealistic goals. Or, your goals might be realistic, but you are not working towards them with full commitment.

Contrarily, you might be over committed to your goals, obsessed with their positive outcomes to the extent that even the smallest of barriers or disruption in the process may derail us from your goals altogether.

What we need is a balanced approach towards not just the goal setting, but also about our goal achievement process. Here are two integral things we tend to miss in our goal setting and achievement process.

  1. 100% commitment.
  2. Detachment.

The Balance Between Commitment and Detachment

Successful goal achievement requires us to work diligently towards our goals with 100% commitment. This means not just setting a goal, but:

  • Brainstorming the process of goal achievement.
  • Thinking ahead of the steps which you would undertake to achieve that particular goal.
  • Thinking about all the alternate routes you would take in case of coming across barriers.

Thus, goal achievement is not a matter of random actions, a matter of luck, it requires a 100% commitment to your goals, planning, execution and systematic action. This brings us to the next

Detachment

We set goals because we are passionate about the outcomes. But if we invest far too much emotions in our goals, we may end up getting obsessed with them, the outcomes we want.

Life is uncertain and difficult. You may not end up achieving all your goals. You may not end up achieving all your goals. Then, No process goes smoothly. There will be unforeseen and unexpected challenges, barriers and delays in our goal achievement process. Or, the outcome might be something totally different and unexpected from what you might have envisioned.

Consequently, you would end up getting disappointed. You may end up losing motivation for your goal achievement when faced with challenges and barriers. Most of us would give up altogether, stop working towards our goals.

So, the right way towards your goal achievement is:

  • Passionately pursuing a goal
  • Investing yourself fully in the process.
  • Taking in stride all the barriers, finding alternate routes.
  • Making adjustments along the way.
  • But detaching yourself from the outcomes
  • Working slowly but diligently.
  • Curbing disappointment you end up missing a milestone.
  • Resisting the urge to say: ‘What’s the point?’
  • Not giving up.
  • Not quitting in the mid.
  • Not getting disappointed if you don’t end up achieving your goal.

Be like the man who plants a seed, while knowing full well that he won’t be able to sit under the shade of the tree or its fruits in his lifetime. Be like the runner who sees others getting ahead of him in a race, and yet he keeps running. True success comes to those who are invested in the process and not just in the outcomes. This principle is not just about goals, it’s a principle of life itself.

To Sum Up

Setting up goals is easier, but achieving them is harder. That’s why people end up giving up too quickly and too soon. Successful goal achievement requires us to be dedicated and committed to the goal achievement process, yet at the same time, it requires us to detach ourselves from the outcomes. Conclusively, goal achievement is about the balance between 100% dedication and detachment.
